Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass

The gold standard for surgical weight loss is the Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass. This operation offers the best long-term weight loss and resolution of medical problems, especially diabetes, of any mainstream weight loss operation.

As with all of our procedures this is performed laparoscopically with small incisions in the upper abdomen. This operation combines making the stomach smaller, in order to allow patients to feel full and satisfied with very small portions of food, while bypassing the remaining stomach and a small segment of the small intestine.

The combination of these two mechanisms provides excellent weight loss while at the same time offering dramatic improvement or resolution of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver and reflux.

Patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after surgery, stay on liquids and soft foods for the first month, and are fully recuperated and eating regular food one month after surgery.

Our patients lose approximately 70% of their excess body weight with this operation and we have seen resolution of diabetes (meaning no more medications with normal blood sugars) in about 65% of our patients and dramatic improvement in our remaining patients.
